It all started with a fact. The Saint-Lawrence river is an incredible, magnificent and rich river. This hydrographic system count amongst on of the most important on our planet. From the great lake region to the Atlantic Ocean it runs through major Canadian and American cities providing fresh water, leisure, transport, fishery and tourism opportunities. Also it takes a great part in the culture and the history of the surrounding population.
Despite these important roles it seems like in many places in the world, our beautiful and resourceful surrounding environment is most often left appart, neglected and abused. Environmental issues are visible all along its poursuit. From chemical and organic pollution, noise pollution, invasive species, disappearance of wetlands, erosion, over exploitation of livestock to dam construction, the river has suffered a lot from the industrial period.
It is only by knowing one’s environment that one begins to understand it and learn to love it. And when we love our environment, the actions to conserve, respect and protect it come naturally. That’s why, in the summer 2014, Richard assembled a team to paddle down the river from Kingston to Gaspé. 1400 km on a kayak to raise awareness on one of our precious wealth. This adventure was created around pillars to touch as many people as possible. Communications with children from the nature camp of « Explos-Nature » were made every week to discuss about the adventure but most of all environmental issues and potential solutions to adopt all along the way to be more responsible and adopt eco friendly lifestyle. Interviews of local solutions and actions taken by people were captured and shared. Garbage and other polluting material were collected during the trip and brought to an artist, « Roch Lantier » who created art sculptures to give another life to what was threw away. The media part shared our actions in front of the general public.
